CEO Participating in IDEA's Consultation on Preferred Electoral System

Project Details

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the People's Effort Advocating for Community Empowerment Sierra Leone (PEACE Salone), Pastor Winner Aruna Kamara, has praised the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) in Sierra Leone for organizing consultations on the preferred electoral system in Sierra Leone, with focus on the Tripartite Committee Recommendation 78

  • Gathering citizen input on preferred electoral systems (District Proportional Representation vs. First Past the Post)
  • Ensuring minimum 30% female representation at all levels as mandated by the Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment Act
  • Developing regulations for managing GEWE quotas and similar measures for youth and people with disabilities
  • Reflecting views of citizens from Bo, Bonthe, Moyamba and Pujehun districts in the constitutional review process
  • Supporting International IDEA's Sierra Leone Democracy Strengthening Programme

Impact

The consultation created an important platform for Sierra Leoneans to voice their opinions on critical national issues. PEACE Salone's participation aligned with their mission to guard democracy, campaign for peace, good governance and socio-economic development. The initiative supports the actualization of International IDEA's democracy strengthening programme in Sierra Leone, which contributes to the country's overall development. The project "Strengthen Democracy and Active Citizens in Bo" has already shown positive impact based on monitoring and evaluation.

Future Plans

PEACE Salone looks forward to partnering with International IDEA to support the actualization of its mandate. They plan to roll out the successful "Strengthen Democracy and Active Citizens" project to other parts of the country when funding becomes available. The organization continues to seek funding from both local and international organizations to support their community development initiatives and commitment to positive change in Sierra Leone through collaboration with like-minded organizations.
